Cummins Drivetrain & Braking Systems, a leading global supplier of drivetrain, mobility, braking, and aftermarket solutions for commercial vehicles announces the new ProTec Independent Front Suspension (IFS) system, specifically designed for buses and coaches. As seen for the first time at the Busworld event (Brussels, 4-9 October 2025, stand 810), the new product is designed to be a “drop-in” replacement for existing suspensions with an important focus on the ease of use and service. It enables Cummins to offer a complete driveline solution for axles and brakes to this key market.

Cummins' IFS has been developed through extensive testing and validation. Full and sub-system durability and reliability testing have taken place in laboratories and in vehicle testing to prove the design. Features such as the high-performance dampers, air springs and anti-roll bars have been optimised for performance and efficiency in premium coaches and city buses.
Compared to traditional bus axles, the IFS delivers improved ride quality, with each wheel moving independently. Road undulations are managed much more smoothly across the entire front axle. Reduced vibration and lower noise mean long journeys are more comfortable, with less intrusion into the cabin. Stability around corners is better, with the independent movement reducing body roll and helping keep the bus more level. All working to deliver a premium feel to the journey for passengers.
Operationally, improved steering geometry delivers more accurate response and stability for safe and confident handling, especially in tight city streets. The Cummins’ IFS has the best-In-class steering angle, up to 60°.
The system is maintenance free, with no greasing required. There is no need for a central lubrication system as the king-pin and steering are greased for life. The rotor is easy to change with no need to remove the hub and bearings.
For OEMs, Cummins’ IFS aligns with low-floor bus designs, making entry and exit easier and improving accessibility, which is critical for city buses and wheelchair access.
“This new Independent Front Suspension can be offered as a complete driveline package with rear axle options; either that latest 17x mechanical or electric ultra-low floor (eULFA) axles” added Stéphane Janiszewski.
Cummins 17x axle has been updated for buses and coaches. Its robust yet lightweight design delivers strong performance and high durability in the most demanding duties including multiple stop-starts. Running costs are minimised due to its high efficiency, with extended oil change intervals. Noise is also reduced due to the Quiet Ride® hypoid gearing.
A wide choice of gear ratios are available based on the vehicle manufacturers’ requirements for fuel economy, torque, or traction. The 17x can also be paired with direct drive electric motors.
Accelera by Cummins’ eULFA axle will also debut at the Busworld event. This ultra-low floor electric axle will be available for zero emission buses.
