Powered by Purpose: Meet Sergio B.

For Sergio B. – known to friends and colleagues simply as Checo – his journey to Cummins began long before he ever set foot in Columbus, Indiana. Coming from a working family, he grew up watching his mother dedicate herself to long hours in manufacturing plants. “That’s where my fascination with this industry first began,” he says. “My mom used to tell me, ‘A good company is one that offers good benefits and looks after its employees. Make sure you work for a company that cares.’” He smiles before adding, “Cummins is exactly that.”

Today, Sergio is a Senior Sourcing Specialist based in Columbus, recently celebrating his five-year anniversary with Cummins. His work connects engineering, supply chain and global suppliers to ensure new products are introduced seamlessly – helping power communities around the world. His days start early, reviewing priorities and aligning with teams across time zones before diving into problem-solving, supplier negotiations and cross-functional collaboration. “What I enjoy most is the sense of purpose behind every decision,” he says. “No two days are ever the same, and that’s what makes this job exciting. Every challenge brings an opportunity to learn, collaborate and make a real impact.”

That sense of connection and shared purpose is something Sergio sees reflected in Cummins’ values every day. For him, integrity and excellence mean making sourcing decisions that strengthen the supply chain and ensure quality products reach customers. “It’s about doing the right thing, even when no one’s watching,” he says. “Our suppliers and customers trust us to deliver, and that’s a responsibility I take seriously.”

Teamwork and inclusion also play a defining role in Sergio’s journey. Through collaboration with global teams and his involvement in the Latino Employee Resource Group (GOAL) and the Southwestern Recruiting Team, he’s found opportunities to learn, lead and give back. “Whether it’s mentoring students, leading capstone projects or representing Cummins at universities, those moments reflect caring and inclusion at their best,” he says. “At Cummins, we don’t just talk about values – we live them.” These experiences have strengthened his leadership, communication and project management skills while shaping his long-term goals. “Cummins has been a place where I can challenge myself and keep growing,” he says. “It’s a universe of opportunities – you can start in one place and end up somewhere you never imagined, doing what you love and making an impact.”

Giving back is also a central part of Sergio’s story. Through his involvement with GOAL and the Southwestern Recruiting Team, he helps first-generation students – many with backgrounds similar to his – see what’s possible. “It reminds me why I do what I do,” he says. “Because when you lift others, you lift yourself too.” His work with Cummins extends beyond recruiting; he’s proud of how the company invests in communities, from partnerships with Su Casa in Columbus to the Cummins Water Works initiative in El Paso and Juárez. “Cummins has a strong tradition of giving back,” he says. “It’s inspiring to see how our teams come together to create real impact in the places we call home.”

When asked what advice he’d give to someone considering a career at Cummins, Sergio doesn’t hesitate. “Go for it!” he says with a smile. “Cummins is truly a great place to work. After five years with the company, Sergio still carries his mother’s words with him, but now, he says, he gets to live them every day. “I’m part of a company that truly cares,” he reflects. “And that makes all the difference.”
